Turbine Straight Mug

Description

Catherine made the Straight Mug on the potter's wheel using porcelain. The mug has multiple textures for your tactile pleasure: a smooth glaze inside and around the rim, with matte and satin finishes on the exterior and handle.

Catherine printed the turbines and a hot stove on an orange background to reference climate change. This piece is a call to action to care for our warming planet as you make it part of your routine.

Process

Catherine makes each cup on the potter's wheel

Once the cup is dry, she puts it back on the wheel to trim it. She then hand-builds a handle, which she attaches to the cup. It’s also at this stage that she paints the piece with bright orange pigment

Catherine fires her pieces three times in an electric kiln over several days: a bisque firing, a glaze firing at ˜1,232⁰C (2,250°F), and a final firing for the handmade decals

Porcelain, glazes, decals
