Description

Yukari’s orchid sushi plate makes delivery night an elegant evening. She builds each one by hand from a single slab of clay in her Montréal studio. Drawing the orchids in wax before glazing, she showcases the raw clay. Made from North American stoneware.

The Orchid Collection

Yukari paints orchids using a wax technique to reveal the natural ceramic beneath. Inspired by nature, her work evokes the connection between the earth and flowers.

Origins, Processes and Materials

Origins	Handmade in Montréal, Canada Materials were sourced from Canadian and Japanese manufacturers
Process	Each plate is handbuilt from a slab of clay and textured by hand by Yukari. The plate is dried and bisque fired in an electric kiln at 955°C (1,751°F). Yukari paints orchids with wax, dips the plate in glaze and fires it a final time at 1,222°C (2,232°F).

How is handmade ceramic made?

Pottery is vibrant with life. Pleasing to the eye and touch, it carries history and human sensitivity. But creating handmade ceramics professionally requires years of experience, aesthetic sensitivity, deep technical skill and a great deal of patience.

What are the different firing techniques?

For thousands of years, people have baked clay objects in ground fire pits to make ceramics, a technique still used today. However, to achieve specific, reproducible results, ceramists use specialized ovens known as kilns which yield more control over temperature and oxygen levels.
