Large Summer Teapot

Teapots are among the most challenging pieces to create in pottery. The Four Seasons Teapot is thoughtfully designed to pour without dripping, with a well-balanced handle for comfortable use. A built-in strainer at the base of the spout filters tea leaves for a smooth, refined pour. During the Edo period in Japan, morning glories in bright purple and yellow were loved for summer.
The Four Seasons Collection

Yukari developed her Four Seasons collection 30 years ago while studying clay in New Brunswick, Canada. Inspired by flowers and plants from her native Japan, she represents the seasons by applying delicate brushwork. This traditional Japanese process involves applying an overglaze, a bright colored enamel, to already glazed ceramics. It then requires a third firing at a low temperature of 745⁰C (1,373⁰F). Japanese artisans typically overglaze white ceramic, but Yukari uses a North-American iron-rich red stoneware to reflect her Western experience.

The handle was pulled by hand and attached to the teapot

The teapot underwent three firings in an electric kiln: a bisque firing at 955⁰C (1,751⁰F), a glaze firing at 1,222⁰C (2,223⁰F), and a final firing for the hand-painted details

How is handmade ceramic made?

Pottery is vibrant with life. Pleasing to the eye and touch, it carries history and human sensitivity. But creating handmade ceramics professionally requires years of experience, aesthetic sensitivity, deep technical skill and a great deal of patience.
